Mountain Bird Farm is a 34 acre farm in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia owned and operated by David Whipple, a park ranger turned poultry farmer. David and his wife, Sara, built their first chicken coop in the winter of 2010. He went from raising 60 laying hens to 300 in five years.
By 2022, David introduced 430 Freedom Rangers to the farm, which he states are “a very natural, slow growing bird” with great flavor. He currently raises Cornish Cross and Kosher Kings, as well.
“I love the day-to-day and the husbandry of chickens,” says David.
The chickens are “day ranged” on pasture and put up at night in mobile coops that get moved daily to fresh pasture. In addition to foraging, the birds are fed a Non-GMO feed from Sunrise Farms.
